Sunshine Round Box

I didn't start with this box in mind! I started with a large wooden box

that I had applied industrial themed die cuts,stencils and texture paste.

Then I was going to ‘rust’ it but the sun was out!!! So I felt like doing

something bright.

I have loads of scrap pieces of rice paper lying around so that was my

answer to what I was going to use for decorating the box.

Firstly I applied a wash of watered down silver paint all over the box.

I stamped onto the rice paper.

Placing the stamped images on a non stick craft sheet I spritzed them

with water. Then added blobs of paint in various parts so the colour

would spread. Some blobs needed a helping hand to spread trying not

to make a hole in the paper. A rip is OK but a hole is harder to disguise.

Then left them to dry on the non stick craft sheet because the rice

paper would have torn into pieces if I had tried to move wet. Rice paper

is tougher than tissue but it does have limitations.

When dry I used a water brush to “draw” around the images, doing this

is easier and quicker than tearing because the rice paper just pulls away

following the water line.

I used gel medium to adhere the rice paper to the round box.

Note to self - check I have the box the right way up!!! Obviously I didn't

until the glue gel had dried! Luckily the 3 trays were easy to remove.

So whilst out of the box I applied a silver wash. Then sticking them back

into the box.

Once everything was dry I added doodles with a white pen and ‘dotted’

paint in various parts of the design.

Then I applied a metallic glaze all over, unfortunately by doing this I lost

some of the white pen doodles!

Finally I applied gloss gel medium.

Pretty Painty Grunge

• Packaging with a brilliant honeycomb structure, so ripped some of the top paper to expose the cells.
• Applied gesso so that my Fresco paint wouldn't soak right through the cardboard.
• Loaded a brayer with paint applied randomly layers of paint. I love how the texture is highlighted. Some areas of the background i used a baby wipe with paint to fill in some of the white areas in the honeycomb. Then letting the paint drip down the background.
• Using scraps of a cotton dressing square, twine I coloured with the paints and stuck down with binder.
• Painted some sequin waste and stuck that down with the binder. I used my heat gun to speed up drying time and not thing I melted some of the sequin waste!!! Not advisable as it gave of an awful smell!
• The air dry clay flowers came about because i was using up some clay that was drying out. I did make roses to start of with but I didn't feel they were right for this project. So i had a go at making flowers using hearts and circles, colouring the clay with paint. Once dry I added the same colour paint I used in the clay. The centres on some I added glitter and some a jade bead.
• Stamped into the clay and cut around the shape, once dry applied paint.
• Metallic glaze paint on the clay flowers and butterflies.
• Splattered with concrete.
• Finally used binder to give a glaze.

Shine Out

My inspiration for this project was a blog post by Jennie Atkinson and Leandra's Metallics video .

I started by gluing scraps of embossed paper to a 12 inch square card as i want to display this in a 3D frame. Also die cut scooter.

Applied black gesso all over.

After watching the video i mixed the metallic glaze with the colours i had chosen. I did a couple of layers but disappointed that the metallic wasn't shining! Then i realised that the metallic being a glaze was meant to be applied over the top of the paint like a glaze. Lesson to self read the label and the answer will be there!!!

Stamped with paint then covered all the background with metallic glaze.

Printed some photos of me when i was a teenager. I'm planning to incorporate photos of my early years as a punk, skinhead and scooterist because I've had so many different hair and clothing styles and i want to be able to show my great nephews and niece what it was like in ‘My Day’. I'm  jealous that these days bright pink or blue hair is ‘normal’ because back in the day some people thought i was ‘weird’.

Using mini clips and screw head brads to hold the photos in place so i am able to change them at a later date.

Lastly added some embellishments and mounted into a 12 inch frame.

Book Binding with a Twist!

I would never have thought to use the papers like this if it hadn't been for the PaperArtsey challenge and the inspiration from the brilliantly talented design team.

My inspiration came from Raquel Burillo . Admittedly I haven't done the same book binding but it got me thinking that it doesn’t have to be the traditional methods such as using a needle, thread etc. I can't do the traditional as I have chronic pain radiating down my arms from my neck so I haven't much strength and dexterity. 

So, this is how I did my project. 

The papers I've used I got at a Sheffield Scrapstore (craft items for kids) a few years ago! They are samples of Ted Baker wallpaper. I can't believe how thick they are you would need some seriously strong wallpaper paste! I still have some left, it took me ages to choose which ones to use. I then trimmed them and stuck them back to back. 

Next, I found some acetate from packaging, cut that to size. I used 3 pieces but the smaller of the pieces with the Paperartsy stencil didn’t look right so popped it between the pages. I wanted a layered look as if I had used thicker clear plastic/acrylic but I'm not sure that I have but I think it still works. 

I applied paint to various stamps and stamped onto the 2 acetate pieces being careful not to slip. Some I stamped on the front of the acetate and some on the back. Same with the stencils. 

Then I added some cogs and screws I had left over from another project. 

Punched the holes.  

I started by threading ribbon through the holes (slip/whip stitch in sewing terms) but because I had only 5 holes it looked uneven at each end. Also, I want to be able to remove the pages to add designs, mediums etc. 

So, plan B! I simply used book rings! To make it look more interesting I added ribbons, fibres, charms also a butterfly and some beads that I had made with polymer clay a few years ago. 

Finally, I splattered paint onto the acetate sheets.
